Het Nieuwe Instituut and curator Lou Stoppard have invited various authors and (experiential) experts to respond to themes from The Hoodie in the form of an essay. On this page you will find a background piece by the curator herself, as well as new contributions for which research and writing assignments have been commissioned, and an older piece that has been an important source of inspiration for the project.

These texts can also be found in the overview on the Background page, which also includes video interviews, a video essay and a video tutorial.

Lou Stoppard
The Hoodie

“As a garment, the hoodie defines our times.”

Troy Patterson
The politics of the hoodie

“The lingering question of the hoodie is simply: Who enjoys the right to wear one without challenge?”

Chinouk Filique de Miranda
How Unisex is the Hoodie?

Chinouk Filique de Miranda, researcher and adviser on the exhibition The Hoodie, examines the ubiquitous garment’s ‘gender-neutral’ reputation in the context of Rotterdam’s retail landscape.

Antwaun Sargent
In the Hood

“The arrival of the hoodie in contemporary art is a reflection of the ways the garment thrown over the head of a Black male is a political event as much as it is a sartorial one.”

Alexandra van Dongen
Hooded Histories

Alexandra van Dongen (curator at Rotterdam's Museum Boijmans van Beuningen) puts the hoodie into historical perspective.
